Victoria Falls Zimbabwe

Victoria Falls known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya which translates as “The Smoke that Thunders” is without doubt one of the world’s true natural wonders. No trip to this part of Africa is complete without marvelling at the constantly changing waters, getting soaked by the spray, or capturing the famous rainbows on film.

Victoria Falls are 1.7 km wide and over 100 metres high, at its peak 10 million litres of water plunge over the edge every second. Below the Falls the waters of the Zambezi are forced between the towering cliffs of the Batoka gorge creating a series of rapids which offer world-class white water rafting.

The tourist infrastructure at Victoria Falls is well developed with a mixture of hotels and lodges ranging from budget options to five star international standard. A huge range of exciting activities is available to suit every taste.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME OF YEAR TO GO?

Ultimately this can depend on many factors unique to you, your budget, interests and expectations which, varies for each individual. Call and we’ll happily discuss some ideas with you. The Falls are spectacular at any time of year. The Falls are at their most spectacular in the late wet season around March or April but due to the reduced amount of spray other times of year may be preferable for photography. The rafting season is dependent on water levels and usually runs between July and October.

DRY SEASON

May to August has clear sunny days with fantastic game viewing. Nights turn cool so you’ll need an extra layer or two.

September becomes hot and the land is now very dry, outstanding game viewing as the animals congregate to water sources.

Spectacular Victoria Falls can be viewed best from June through to September when the water levels are low resulting in less spray to inhibit your view.

green SEASON

The rains fall from November through to March transforming the land which is now lush, green and dense, animals are more dispersed and guides work harder.

The wet season brings promise of new life everywhere and animals are giving birth.

Migrating birds have arrived and many birds are in their breeding plumage, this is a spectacular time for bird watchers.

SHOULDER SEASON

By April most of the rain should cease. The days are warmer and the land begins to dry out. Temperatures drop at night.

October sees a rise in temperature where the days become very hot and the land parched. Excellent time for game viewing.

November can be unpredictable, with either very hot dry spells or the beginning of the rainy season.
