Nyungwe Forest National Park
In the southwest of Rwanda, Nyungwe Forest National Park is the largest swathe of tropical montane forest left in East or Central Africa. There are a number of walking and hiking trails where tall ancient mahogany and ebony trees giant tree ferns tower above you with orchids hanging from the branches.
The park has hundreds of species of tropical birds and over seventy five mammal species including thirteen species of primate.
The main reason to visit this park is to track chimpanzees of which there are around 500 in the park. Other primates often seen include, Ruwenzori Colubus Monkey's which are found in troupes several hundred strong, the handsome L,Hoest's monkey, Silver monkey, golden monkey,grey cheeked Mangabey, Owl faced monkey, red tailed monkey, Dent's Mona monkey, crowned monkey and Vervet monkey.
Birders will love Nyungwe, Giant hornbills, great blue turacos, paradise flycatcher and red-breasted sparrowhawks are amongst the birds you may see.
A couple of Days at Nyungwe Forest National Park complements a three or four night stay in Parc National Des Volcans trekking the Mountain Gorillas.
