Parc National Des Volcans
"Park National Des Volcans" is located in the heart of Central Africa in the Virungas Mountains. The Park comprises old volcanoes towering up to almost 15,000 feet, thickly covered in dense green rainforest. Situated in the far northwest of Rwanda, the Parc des Volcans protects the steep slopes of this magnificent mountain range which is home to around 350 rare mountain gorilla's. This area was made famous by the work of Diane Fossey to protect the Gorillas, immortalised in the film "Gorillas in the Mist"
Gorilla Trekking is undoubtedly the highlight of a visit to this National Park. As the trail enters the national park, trekkers are immersed in the mysterious intimacy of the rainforest, alive with the calls of colourful birds and chattering of the rare golden monkey, and littered with fresh spoor of the mountains’ elusive populations of buffalo and elephant. Gaps in the forest canopy offer a glimpse of the magnificent peaks which straddle the borders of Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo much of which is protected by National Parks.
There are several lodges in the area which serve as bases for Gorilla Trekking acivities and are easily accessible from Kigali by road.
Because of its high altitude, Rwanda has a pleasant tropical highland climate. Due to variation in altitude the temperature may vary considerably from region to region with the lowland areas being much warmer than the highlands. It is possible to visit this park at anytime but the trekking is easier in the drier seasons between Mid December and Mid March and June to mid october. It is still perfectly possible to travel during the rains, when the scenery can be stunning and the flora lush and it can be ideal for photography of both the gorillas and the scenery.
