EASTERN CAPE REGION

The Eastern Cape region is suitable as a destination in its own right or as a leg of a self drive or flying safari taking in Cape Town and the Garden route. The area is malaria free making it an attractive and often less costly family friendly safari alternative to the wilder big five reserves further north.

The Eastern Cape contains a number of excellent private game reserves, some of which are big five reserves whilst others specialise in particular species of African wildlife. The reserves which are open year round, are very well run with excellent guiding and good game viewing in areas which can be very beautiful.

An Eastern Cape safari could include the third largest national park in South Africa, The Addo Elephant Park is home to a dense population of elephant as well as claiming big seven game viewing with great white shark and whales added to the terrestrial big five.

Scenic diversity is one of the most striking characteristics of the region, ranging from the lush, evergreen Tsitsikamma Forest to the rugged Baviaanskloof Wilderness Area, the southern slopes of the Drakensberg and the arid Great Karoo. Alternating between sweeping sand, river mouths, rocks and coves, the coastline is a paradise for water sports enthusiasts. Among them, surfers ride the perfect waves, anglers reel in king-size catches, and board sailors revel in the challenge of the wind. Sunshine all year round, fine leisure resorts and splendid facilities ensure that the great outdoors is always in style.

Whether you're in the mood for an informal seaside escape, an encounter with the "Big Five" on safari, or a choice of scintillating city diversions, you're sure to find what you're looking for in the Eastern Cape.

The Eastern Cape is a year round destination so when to visit depends on your interests.
