The Garden Route

The Garden Route spans South Africa's Western Cape coastal belt from Witsands whale birthing haven in the west through Plettenberg Bay's beach, polo and party-going pleasures to the Tsitsikamma National Park and Storms River Mouth in the East.

An abundance of blue skies, white sand beaches, rolling oceans, dramatic mountain scenery, indigenous fynbos, ostrich farms and local hospitality. Open roads with little traffic, golden vineyards, sun-drenched orchards, magnificent forests, sweeping lakes and dramatic passes all add to the mix.

Along with the spectacular scenery and superb beaches are some of the finest golf courses in Africa. Other activities include excellent sea fishing and also the opportunity to cage dive with great white sharks or view whales and dolphins from land or sea, surfing, horse riding and even bungee jumping and paragliding are all possible.
There are a number of excellent walks in this region including the world famous "Otter Trail", a five day trip crossing rivers tidal pools and forests with the opportunity to view dolphins whales and seals en route and if you are very lucky, cape clawless otters.

The Garden Route has a number of very pleasant small coastal and inland towns and some really excellent gourmet restaurants many specialising in the local seafood.

There are excellent small boutique hotels and guest houses in most towns so there is no shortage of comfortable and friendly accommodation.

Distances are not great so you can base yourself at a central point along the Garden Route, Knysna is an excellent choice, and visit different areas on self drive day trips. You can also stay at different points along the route spending a day or two in each.

Safari Club recommend that you spend between five and seven nights in this area to fully explore and appreciate its beauty.

Like the Winelands and Cape Town this area combines perfectly with a Safari in the Kruger region or Botswana's Okavango Delta or Chobe Game Reserve
