SAND RIVERS

Sand Rivers Selous is a haven of natural luxury, a small, peaceful yet vibrant safari hub within the vast Selous wilderness. Set on a sweeping curve of the great Rufiji River, the lodge is both an expedition base and a safari retreat that has been well loved by safari buffs for years.

It was originally built in 1984 by Richard Bonham who used this area of the Selous for his famous portered walking safaris throughout the eighties, when the area was all but unknown. Eight spacious open-fronted cottages, built from stone and thatch, are raised on the banks of the Rufiji River offering amazing views. Each cottage has a large en-suite bathroom with flush toilets, and powerful showers with hot and cold water. There is a large open-fronted mess and swimming pool. and the atmosphere is familiar, the service at-your-whim. The Selous Game Reserve, a a massive 50,000 kilometres square (bigger than Belgium) is wilderness on a huge scale. And although it’s a seemingly infinite place, it has great subtlety. Wildlife encounters are intimate and dreamlike; animals appear and disappear into the bush, and the scenery is breath-taking.

The lodge is the base for some of Tanzania’s best safari guides to take you out for adventures; boating on the Rufiji, driving on the trail of lion or wild dog, an elephant bush walk, a night sleeping under the stars, or fishing in solitude, barefoot off a river rock. Seasonal highlights – June to September; warm days and cool nights, best time of year for our walking safaris. Great elephant and buffalo sightings. October-November: heavy concentrates of game around the inland lakes, weather dry and hot. December- March: prolific bird life, many animals calving, weather starts to get humid, with possibility of rain.

HIGHLIGHTS – The sight and sound of the river, and the great variety of adventures to be had along it, and in the surrounding woodlands. Fabulous sightings of the river residents (hippos and crocodiles) , and great birding. Game drives, fly camps walks and boat trips and walks in a variety of diverse areas from Steiglers Gorge, Kidai Island and Lake Tagallala. Great fishing, and visits to the game viewing platforms at ‘The
Garden.

Good local flight connections mean Sand Rivers Camp will combine very well  with Jongomero Camp in Ruaha with possibility of also visiting the chimpanzees at Greystoke Mahale Camp on Lake Tangayanika or Chada Camp in Katavi National Park in Western Tanzania.

ACTIVITIES – Game drives in open 4WD vehicles, walks, fly camping, boating, fishing, birding, picnics and bush lunches.
