Southern Tanzania Safaris


Tanzania Safaris Map  Southern Tanzania is home to some of the world’s largest and most unspoilt game parks and reserves and is considerably less well known than the world famous parks of Northern Tanzania. Southern Tanzania remains a true wilderness containing two of the largest protected areas in Africa and will appeal to those of an adventurous nature who would like to see Africa as it was when the first explorers arrived, wild and largely untouched by man.

Tanzania's Southern Safari Circuit includes Africa's largest protected wilderness The huge Selous Game Reserve, Ruaha National Park (the largest park in Tanzania following its recent extension) and the little known wildlife paradise of Katavi National Park in the West.

The wildlfe viewing in these areas is also outstanding and there are only a few small and mostly high quality safari camps within a vast area. There are good connections by air to Dar Es Salaam and Zanzibar and therefore the areas is best visited on a flying safari. Also possible on a safari in this area is a visit to beautiful Lake Tanganyika and the habituated chimpanze troops in Mahale Mountains National Park and at Gombe Stream.

The coast of Tanzania and the tropical Islands of Zanzibar, Pemba and Mafia boast some superb beaches as well as world class scuba diving and big game fishing and combine very easily with a safari on Tanzania's southern circuit to give the perfect "Bush and Beach" holiday.

The best time to visit the Southern Tanzania is in the drier winter months between June and October, November to March are also quite good although it can be hot. Most camps are closed for the months of April and May when the main rains fall.

This excellent value fabulous safari and beach holiday combines four nights at Sand Rivers Camp in the Selous Game Reserve the largest protected wildlife area in the world with Fundu Lagoon on the relatively undeveloped and beautiful Indian Ocean island of Pemba.

We start our safari holiday with a scenic air transfer to Selous Game Reserve and our luxury lodge on the bank of the Rufiji River where we will spend the next four nights. In addition to the excellent game viewing the big attraction of the Selous is the possibility of fly camping, guided walks and game viewing by boat on the magnificent and pristine Rufiji River. Activities which are not possible in most of Tanzania’s other parks.

We then fly from Selous to the forested Island of Pemba where you will be staying for trhe next seven nights. Our resort is situated on a remote and beautiful beach on the south western side of the island and is only accessible by boat.

Fundu Lagoon is the epitome of a "bare foot paradise" with a distinct Robinson Crusoe air in a remote and peaceful location. It is a place for guests to relax and unwind in casual, yet stylish surroundings with its own spa. More active guests can fish, canoe, sail, dive or snorkel.
