Samburu National Reserve
Samburu National Reserve is located in the North of Kenya on the opposite bank of the Ewaso Nyiro River to Buffalo Springs Reserve and adjacent to Shaba Reserve. The river acts as a magnet for wildlife from the very arid, surrounding, savannah plains.
During the dry season months between June and October the water and lush vegetation attracts a very high concentration of wildlife. There are a number of rare Northern Species found here including Grevy's Zebra, Gerunek, Somali Ostrich, Beisa Oryx and Reticulated Giraffe. The Samburu National Reserve has plentiful elephants and all the big cats are regularly sighted here.Samburu also has some highly endangered wild dogs and is a mecca for bird watchers.
The Reserve is located in the tribal lands of the Samburu people, a colourful culture with close links to the Maasai in the South. They are semi-nomadic pastoralists, herding cattle and also, because of the terrain in which they live, goats and camels.
Samburu is less developed than some Kenyan Parks and as a result, sees less visitors. The excellent wildlife viewing makes it well worth a visit and good flight connections make it a good choice as part of a safari circuit with the Maasai Mara and Laikipia Conservancy.
