Shaba National Reserve
The Shaba National Reserve is very peaceful, and attracts animals because of the River Ewaso Nyiro (meaning brown water – pronounced U-aa-so-Nyee-ro) that runs through it, and the mixture of acacia, riverine forest, thorn trees and grass vegetation. The Ewaso Nyiro flows from the Kenyan highlands, and terminates down stream at the famous Lorian Swamp. The natural serenity that is evident here is because of its distance from development, industries and inaccessibility for many years.Animals commonly seen on a Shaba safari are elephant, lion, cheetah, grevy’s zebra, giraffe, gerenuk, buffalo, oryx, grants gazelle, dikdik and waterbuck. The river forest attracts a wide variety of birds.
Shaba was one of Joy Adamson’s greatest African loves; it was in this tranquil wilderness where she released the first hand-raised leopards.
