Liwonde National Park
This Malawis premier wildlife park with a very healthy population of elephant and a river overflowing with crocodile and hippo, there are also a number of antelope species including the beautiful sable antelope. There is a programme to re introduce species which were once endemic to the area into the park and rhino, eland. wildebeest, roan, hartebeest and zebra are all now present.
The park lies to the south of Lake Malawi and includes Lake Malombe, The Shire River and Eastern Upper Shire Plain.
A safari in Liwonde can be easily combined with a few days on the shores of Lake Malawi.
The park is well managed and the varied scenery very attractive which compensates for the slightly lower variety of mammals to be found here. It is also a paradise for bird watchers with over 400 of the 650 species found in Malawi spotted here.
The best time to visit Liwonde for a safari is between May and November when it is drier.
