Winter in the African sun

08/10/2007

Safari Club clients are always asking which African countries are best for a safari holiday in the European winter.

In the early winter months of November and December it can rain in both East and Southern Africa, whilst both areas are possible the drier countries offer the best options. Namibia and Botswana experience lower levels of rainfall and make a good choice.

Chobe National Park, The Okavango Delta and Etosha Pan all have good game viewing. At this time many animals give birth making for interesting predator and prey interaction.

Prices in these countries are much lower at this time so areas which can be very expensive in peak season become much more affordable., whilst the game viewing is still excellent and the bush is not too thick or the grass too long to make game viewing difficult.

As we get into January and February the summer rainy season is at its peak in Southern Africa. some camps and lodges close but more open parks with good quality road networks can be very rewarding and are particulary good at this time of year for bird watching.

The Cape region is dry and sunny at this time so a trip to the Garden Route or Cape Town goes very nicely with a few days on safari.

Kenya and Northern Tanzania are usually dry again from January to early March, it is lovely and warm and the East African coast is at its best for diving and fishing with clear warm seas.

The Serengeti, Maasai Mara and other parks see far fewer tourists whilst the game viewing can be excellent and prices are lower.

This is the perfect time for an exciting safari followed by a few lazy days on a palm fringed, white sand beach in Lamu or Zanzibar to chase away those winter blues.
