Tanzania Zambia Uganda Alternatives
Safari Club have recently been asked for advice on alternatives to Kenya for an African Safari these are our thoughts.
Southern Tanzania is an excellent, value for money alternative safari destination. The less visited and remote Mikumi and Ruaha National Parks and the worlds largest protected area, the Selous Game Reserve have wonderful wildlife and offer a varied and fascinating experience. There is excellent access by air and these parks combine brilliantly with the exotic Indian Ocean Islands of Pemba, Mafia and Zanzibar.
They can also be easily combined on a Safari circuit with Lake Tangyanika for some chimp trekking and fishing or snorkelling in the lake.
Northern Tanzania is another superb option, the Serengeti, Nogorongoro Crater, Kilimanjaro and Tarangire areas make a suberb safari and the opportunity exists to witness the greatest wildlife spectacle on earth, the annual wildebeest migration at close quarters. These areas also combine nicely with the beaches of Zanzibar and the lesser known islands of Mafia and Pemba.
Zambia is a country with superb wildlife parks and relatively few visitors, the prime destinations here are South Luangwa, Lower Zambezi and Kafue National park all prime game viewing areas with excellent wildlife populations. Prices here are reasonable and expert guiding ensures a superb safari.
Zambia also has the attraction of Victoria Falls, a must see for any visitor to this part of Africa.
There are regular flight connections to Dar Es Salaam and the beaches of Zanzibar and the coast.
Uganda is not well known as a safari destination but does in fact have some very beautiful wildlife parks with most of the East African game species present plus a great variety of primates.
The principal National Parks include Muchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth, Semliki and Kidepo Valley. What makes Uganda very special is the opportunity to track and spend time with the highly endangered Mountain Gorillas of the Bwindi Impenetrable forest.

A lesser-known fact is that...
Botswana only has limited safari accommodation and finding space at short notice is almost impossible.
