What can we say? It was without doubt the best holiday either of us have ever had, and we have been on some good ones in the past. We would like to thank Paul for all his hard work, great patience and his very good advice.

NGORONGORO SERENA SAFARI LODGE

Ngorongoro Serena Lodge is perched on the jagged rim of the crater, wreathed in morning mist, camouflaged in river-stone and cloaked in indigenous creepers, the Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge is a triumph of ecological and architectural fusion. Sensitively constructed so as to take nothing from its environment whilst retaining endless vistas of the crater below, the rock built buildings of the Lodge hug the crater rim, linked by rope-lashed timber walkways that skirt the buttressed roots of ancient, liana-hung trees.
The interior, radiating out from the log fire glowing at the heart of the Lodge, blends perfectly with the silence and natural earthy colour of a game-viewing hide. Lit by flaming wall-lanterns, clad in gigantic volcanic boulders and decorated by the iron spears, bright-beaded robes and intricately carved artefacts of the Maasai, the Lodge is a unique blend of world-class luxury, timeless volcanic splendour and ethnic style.
The views are incredible, from lilac-streaked sunrise, to the star-studded night, the Ngorongoro Crater is constanrly changing vista of great beauty.
The hotel has 75 rooms. Activities include game drives through the crater where you will see a microcosm of Africa in one day, bush walks, picnic lunches, excursions to the nearby Olduvai Gorge, the ‘birthplace of mankind’ and a variety of cultural events.
Serena Lodges offer a reassuringly reliable product and Ngorongero Serena is no exception. In our opinion this is the nicest of the large chain lodges on the crater rim Serena although very large is a decent option in a great location which we frequently include in our itineraries. Clients with smaller budgets may opt to stay at one of the smaller lodges located in Karatu and the surrounding area.
