Fundu Lagoon

Fundu Lagoon is on Pemba Island, which is part of the Zanzibar archipelago and lies to the north of its larger, better known sister island. The hotel is situated on a remote and beautiful beach on the south western side of Pemba, and is only accessible by boat.

There are sixteen rooms, consisting of canvas tents set under makuti (thatch) roofs on wooden decks, all with views over the sea. The rooms are equipped with large double or twin beds, mosquito nets, ceiling and standing fans, and indoor and outdoor seating areas. Each has an ensuite bathroom with fresh hot water shower, toilet and basin. The rooms are connected to the main buildings by wooden walkways or paths through indigenous forest. Some rooms are situated along the beachfront and the remaining on the hillside, which have wide views over the lagoon. Two of our sixteen rooms are suites, with their own private chill out deck and plunge pool, and two are superior suites which also have an extensive indoor and outdoor lounge space and mezzanine platform.

The main hotel is built under thatch and is large and airy and overlooks the sea. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served in the main dining area or at the jetty bar with a three course lunch and dinner, all with a choice of dishes of international standard. Some meals will be served on the white sandy beach. There are two bars, one of which is situated a third of the way along a long jetty which stretches way out into the sea.

Fundu is the epitome of a "bare foot paradise" with a distinct Robinson Crusoe air in a remote and peaceful location. It is a place for guests to relax and unwind in casual, yet stylish surroundings. For the ultimate in stress relief you can visit the treatment room where a variety of massage and beauty therapies are available.

The main means of visiting Pemba Island are by light aircraft charter or schedule flight. There is also a ferry service but this is not always reliable. The airport is Chake Chake in the centre of the island, and the main port used by the ferry service is Mkoani in the south-west. After arriving at the airport there is a short vehicle ride to Mkoani Port on a newly built bitumen road which takes approximately 30 minutes. We then provide a private speedboat service (20-25 minutes) from Mkoani Port to Fundu Lagoon. There is no useable road access.

The hotel has a fully equipped dive centre and trips are available to nearby Misali Island with a pristine beach and superb snorkelling and diving. Dhow sunset cruises, canoe safaris through the mangroves, sailing trips on a 30' catamaran or in the canoes of the local fishermen are also available. Excursions around Pemba island can also be organised with some advanced notice.
