Mdonya Old River

Mdonya Old River is a small safari camp set in the western part of the Ruaha National Park.  It offers the true bush experience, and is a little rustic, but more than makes up for this by its location within a beautiful wilderness area, its proximity to game and welcoming atmosphere.  Mdonya Old River Camp allows you go get very, very close to nature with wildlife wandering through camp and therefore Mdonya Old River is not recommended for young children.

The tents at Mdonya Old River Camp are large, walk-in Meru-style tents, under the shade of large sycamore figs, nestled in the curving banks of a sand-river. They are traditional safari tents, comfortably furnished with double or twin beds and with large verandas where one can relax and observe the wildlife around. Each is very comfortable, with an en-suite bathroom, including a hot shower – yet with none of the frills of a luxury camp.

There are hides at both ends of the camp, where guests can sit and watch the game pass by all day long. The dining and lounge tents are under acacias and sycamore figs overlooking the dry river bed which is used by game as a corridor, so guests can enjoy the game viewing even while having lunch or relaxing.

Activities at Mdonya focus largely on game drives in open-topped 4x4 vehicles. Head out in the morning and the afternoon with two of Mdonya's safari guides, who have a good level of knowledge, and know the park like the back of their hands. Game drives here usually go out with two guides, one working as a driver and the more experienced standing up to spot and track wildlife; this maximises your chances of great game sightings, and frees up the guide to chat with you without having to concentrate on the driving.

Mdonya Old River camp offers an exciting and authentic safari experience and is possibly the best value accommodation in the Ruaha National Park

Mdonya Old River Camp is usually combined with one of its sister camps in the Selous Game Reserve either Selous Impala camp and Lake Manze Camp
