Katavi National Park is Tanzania’s third largest park and is a true wilderness, isolated, untrammeled and seldom visited, providing the few intrepid souls who make it there with a thrilling taste of Africa as it must have been a century ago.
The bulk of Katavi is woodland, home to substantial but elusive populations of the eland, sable and roan antelope. The main focus for game viewing within the park is the Katuma River and associated floodplains such as the seasonal Lakes Katavi and Chada.
During the dry season, when the floodwaters retreat, a safari in Katavi truly comes into its own. The Katuma is the only source of drinking water for miles around, and the flanking floodplains support game concentrations that defy belief. An estimated 4,000 elephants might converge on the area, together with huge herds of buffalo, an abundance of giraffe, zebra, impala and reedbuck provide easy pickings for the numerous ...

Katavi National Park can be an interesting addition to a Southern safari circuit but beware of the ferocious Tsetse flies that plague the area.

There are just few small safari camps all of which are located on the Katuma River and the neighboring plains, so you will be based here.
Katavi is best in the dry season months between May and October with the later months being the best for game viewing.
Game viewing is good throughout this period but improves as the dry season continues and peaks in hot early summer months of September and October.
