“Park National Des Volcans” is located in the heart of Central Africa in the Virunga’s Mountains. The park comprises old volcanoes towering up to almost 15,000 feet, thickly covered in dense green rainforest. The Parc National des Volcans protects the steep slopes of this magnificent mountain range which is home to around 350 rare mountain gorillas. This area was made famous by the work of Diane Fossey to protect the gorillas, immortalised in the film “Gorillas in the Mist”.
Mountain gorilla trekking is undoubtedly the highlight of a visit to this national park. Gaps in the forest canopy offer a glimpse of the magnificent peaks which straddle the borders of Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo much of which is protected by national parks.
The gorilla trekking lodges are located around a two hours scenic drive from Kigali and generally the trekking here is less arduous than in neighbouring Uganda.

Rwanda has a pleasant tropical highland climate with the lowland areas being much warmer than the highlands. It is possible to visit this park at any time but the trekking is easier in the drier seasons between Mid-December and Mid-March and June to Mid-October. It is still perfectly possible to travel during the wetter months when the scenery can be stunning and the conditions perfect for photography.
Rwanda experiences two dry seasons in which gorilla trekking would be preferable. You can experience light cloud coverage which helps to keep the temperature more comfortable. June, July, August and September is generally considered the best time for gorilla trekking. December through to February is the shorter of the two dry seasons offering another window of opportunity here.
Rwanda’s longest rainy season starts from around mid-March, lasting through to May. Rains are generally heavy and constant. For another two months in October through to November the rains start once more but for a shorter period.
Rwanda only really experiences two types of weather conditions with the rainy season and the dry season.
