Selous Game Reserve is the largest game reserve in Africa. The landscape is diverse from hot volcanic springs, seasonal lakes and channels of the Great Ruaha and Rufiji rivers to forests and open plains.
You will see few other tourists on a safari in Selous as the reserve has only a few small, well-spaced out safari camps.
Good connections by air make access surprisingly easy and direct connections by air from Zanzibar means a few days in atmospheric Stone Town or on a white sand beach on Zanzibar or Mafia Islands make for relaxed ending to an exciting Safari holiday.

Selous Game Reserve also combines very well in a Southern Safari Circuit with Ruaha National Park. The close proximity to Zanzibar makes it ideal for a “bush and beach” honeymoon destination.

The best area for game viewing is around Lake Manze and along the river channels and lagoons close to the river. The game viewing in the more remote areas of the reserve can be more challenging due to the thick bush and skittish game.
The best time to visit Selous is during the dry season from June to the end of October. The summer months from November to February have good game viewing but can be very hot.
January and February are hot and dry with good game viewing.
June should see the end of the long rains. Days are relatively cool and clear, seasonal bargains may be available.
By July the bush is green and lush with good game viewing.
August is lovely and warm during the day. Animal herds are growing larger on land, congregating near water sources. This is a good time for game viewing.
September is now hot and dry, the bush parch. Game viewing is excellent.
October remains hot and dry, water is now scarce making for outstanding game viewing near permanent water.
Long rains begin in April and continue through to May. Low season rates may apply, although most camps can be closed.
Intermittent rains begin late in November and continues in December, game viewing still quite good.
