South Luangwa is the jewel in the Zambian crown, famous for its stunning scenery, variety and concentration of animals.
The park is sandwiched between the Luangwa River and the Muchinga Escarpment and covers a vast area. The accessible areas of the reserve are along the Luangwa River and its hinterland which includes the floodplain of the river and the oxbow lakes and seasonally dry tributaries that flow into the main river. The availability of water throughout the year acts as a magnet for game particularly at the end of the dry season when game concentrations are phenomenal.
The Luangwa River is teeming with crocodile and hippo and the surrounding woodland is home to lion, giraffe, hyena, zebra, elephant, wild dog, huge herds of buffalo and it is also one of the best places to see leopard in Africa. South Luangwa National Park is a birders paradise particularly during the wetter months.

The central Mfuwe area has the highest concentration of game whilst the Northern and Southern areas also have superb game viewing but with only a few small camps there are far less other vehicles around.
The best time to visit is during the dry months from May to October with August and September usually the optimum for game viewing. A few camps in the central area are open all year round and offer excellent green season game viewing and birding.
From May you’ll experience clear sunny days but temperatures can still be cooler in the evening. Game viewing is good.
Moving into August the days are warmer and the bush has dried out, meaning the game viewing is now excellent and becomes outstanding right through to November!
First rainfall is normally expected in November, still hot and now humid with continued great game viewing.
December see the first thunderstorms with short showers followed by sunny periods and good game viewing.
Regular rain fall continues in January making the bush now green and the grass long. Animals are more dispersed and harder to locate.
Many camps close in January through to March as the bush is now dense.
It rains less often in April and by May clear blue skies herald the beginning of the dry season, days are sunny and the bush is starting to dry out, call us for early season bargains.
