The Garden Route is a slender stretch of coastal plain between Mossel Bay and Storms River Mouth. This piece of paradise is bisected by rivers coming down from the mountains behind and tumbling down to the rocky shores and sandy beaches.
This is South Africa’s premier tourist destinations. An abundance of blue skies, white sand beaches, rolling oceans, dramatic mountain scenery, indigenous fynbos, ostrich farms and local hospitality. Open roads with little traffic, golden vineyards, sun-drenched orchards, magnificent forests, lakes and dramatic passes all add to the mix.
There are a number of excellent walks in this region including the world famous “Otter Trail”, a five day trip crossing rivers tidal pools and forests with the opportunity to view, dolphins whales and seals en route and if you are very lucky, cape clawless otters.

Distances are not great so you can base yourself at a central point along the Garden Route, Knysna is an excellent choice, and visit different areas on self-drive day trips. You can also stay at different points along the route spending a day or two in each. Speak to one of our expert consultants with first-hand experience to discuss your options.
The Garden Route is a year round destination so when to visit depends on your interests. The winter months from May to July can be quite cold and at times windy however the weather is quite changeable so the odd wet days are usually followed by warm sunny periods. The Garden route has a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry, summer months between December and March
The main summer holidays in South Africa are in the months of December and January and hotels get booked out early at this time.
May has regular rainfall whilst you can still experience plenty of nice sunny spells.
June to July can be quite cold and wet with regular rainfall in the Western Cape.
Rain continues in August as the weather begins to warm up again.
Whale watching season begins and continues through to December.
By September temperatures are warming up and October through to November the weather can be pleasantly warm with just occasional rainfall. This is prime time for Whale watching.
